Freelance writing is being a specialist

Today the demand is for good 'niche writers'. Restrictive though it is, like everything else, even here, the need for specialization is at an all time high. Travel writers, Creative writers, Copywriters, Resume writers, Content writers, Technical writers, Essay writers, you name it, and there is a market for it. If you are slowly able to, after a few initial experiments, carve out a niche for yourself by specializing in any one such field and you get published (usually without payment first!) you are almost there. Once you manage to sell your ideas, you are home and running.

Freelance writer - How to get started

Your best bet is to email/call up editors and constantly surf the net for opportunities. Make Search Engines (google, yahoo) your trusted lieutenants and use them to help you seek, search and finally apply to advertised or possible opportunities.

If you find good websites you could write for, look for submission guidelines or send in your query. A query letter is not a waste of time. On an average three out of every five will elicit some kind of a response that will take you forward.

Though it is usual practice in established writing circles not to start writing till an understanding is reached, you the newbie can take no chances. So, till you have sufficient work, give them what they've asked for, quickly, whatever the subject, or send them something you have already written. Odds are that they will use it and pay you with a nice "Thank you for your submission' letter or not at all, but if rejected or if you don't hear from them ever again, which is highly likely, don't lose heart. Move on. Just keep those articles as ready-reckoner samples for later use. Stockpile them in a folder for the future, to be sent on to other editors who may seek samples of your written work.

If they are freelance writing markets, narrow in on the popular ones. Subscribe to their newsletters. Most of them are free. It will give you a fair idea of their reliability. Generally avoid those that promise you the moon. Look for those that seem sincere. But do not subscribe or pay for anything till you are sure of a website's credentials. Also, remember to check out the various published lists of dishonest and fly-by-night operators often. Soon you will be able to sift the wheat from the chaff.

What is Freelance?

A freelancer, freelance worker, or freelance is a self-employed person who pursues a profession without a long-term commitment to any particular employer. The term "freelance" was first coined by Sir Walter Scott (1771–1832) in his well-known historical romance Ivanhoe to describe a "medieval mercenary warrior" (or "free-lance"). The phrase later transitioned to a figurative noun around the 1860s and was then officially recognized as a verb in 1903 by various authorities in etymology such as the Oxford English Dictionary. Only in modern times has the term morphed from a noun (a freelance) into an adjective (a freelance journalist), various verb forms (a journalist who freelances) and an adverb (she worked freelance), and then from the verb into the derived, now commonly-used, noun form "freelancer".

As a writer be aware of words

1. Simplicity: use small words. The more simply an idea is presented, the easier it is to understand – and, therefore, the more credible it will be.

2. Brevity: use short sentences. This is less about self-restraint than it is a matter of finding exactly the right piece of the language jigsaw puzzle to fit the precise space you’re trying to fill.

3. Credibility is as important as philosophy. If your words lack sincerity, if they contradict accepted facts, circumstances or perceptions, they will lack impact. Tell people who you are or what you do. Then be that person, and do what you have said you would do.

4. Consistency matters. Repetition. Repetition. Repetition. Remember, you may be making yourself sick by saying the same exact thing for the umpteenth time, but many in your audience will be hearing it for the first time.
5But offer something new. If something doesn’t shock us or bores us, we move on to something else. If what you say generates an ‘I didn’t know that’ response, you have succeeded.

6. Sound and texture matter. The sounds and textures of words should be just as memorable as the words themselves. The rhythm of language is in itself musical.

7. Speak aspirationally. Messages need to say what people want to hear, to touch people at the most fundamental, primal level, by speaking to their deepest hopes, fears and dreams. The best speeches make idealists of us all.

8. Visualise. Paint a vivid picture. Take M&M’s: ‘Melts in your mouth, not in your hand’. The slogans we remember for a lifetime almost always have a strong visual component, something we can see and almost feel.

9. Ask a question. A customer complaining to the shop manager that her meat has too much fat in it is less effective than if she asked: ‘Does this look lean to you?’. Similarly, asking ‘What would you do if you were in my shoes?’, puts direct pressure on the recipient of your complaint to see things your way. Making a statement in the form of a rhetorical question makes the reaction personal.

10. Provide context. You have to give people the ‘why’ of a message before you tell them the ‘therefore’ and the ‘so that’.

Elance.com or any other freelance site

To have an idea on how Elance works and what kind of projects people are posting. Visit this link:

Elance.com

There are plenty of great resources to hire a freelancer. These are:

  • http://thewritetouch.no-frills.net/

To post your project on Elance.com or any other freelance site you should first open a free account with them, and then open a bid request. Your bid request should include:

  • A clear description of your project without giving a lot of details.
  • Maximum Bid. This is the highest bid offer you will accept. Freelancer can bid lower to gain your business, but not higher.
  • Bidding Close Date. This is the date (in U.S format--mm/dd/yyyy hh:mm:ss) you want to close bidding and not accept any more bids.
  • The number of days the freelancer have to work on the project and deliver the final work. If you omit a deadline, then the he is under no time obligation to deliver!

Before accepting any bid you should verify that the person you are selecting is apt to handle the project effectively. You can do this by:

  • Asking the ghostwriter for his references.
  • Asking for a sample of his work.
  • Visiting his profile page, where you can find more information about him and also what people who worked with him have to say about his work.

Freelance Ghost Writers

Who could be a Ghost Writer?. Well anyone who likes and has a passion to write. Those who may have the flair to bring across the text wold alive into the mind of the reader.

There are various categories for a Ghost Writer. It could be blog writing, novel writing, autobiography etc.

Here is what a ghostwriter / freelancer can do for you:

  • Research on the internet and other sources
  • Compilation of all the information you provide them
  • Professional writing that makes your ideas sound really great
  • Write a compelling book that rivets a reader's interest
  • Usage of language that is apt according to the topic
  • Delivering the complete packaged product version ready to sell.

All you have to do is provide them with your ideas, research, and information about your ebook then let them do the work for you.

Here are some of the advantages of letting a ghostwriter write for you:

  • All the writing work and designing is easily outsourced to ghostwriters. They do all the work you get the benefit (and the profits)!
  • Save time and energy that could be used efficiently in other directions.
  • You keep 100% of the copyright.
  • They can do the research for you.

The procedure is as follows. You have to post your project on the website. The freelancer who is interested in your project will place a bid. The cost of this work depends on the expertise required, the nature of the project and the volume of work. You are free to negotiate. Ghostwriters work mostly for themselves. If you generate repeat business for them a business relationship gets established. The ghostwriters or freelancer may then charge a lower fee for the returning client as it helps generate higher business volumes. The investment you make in hiring a ghostwriter is returned many times over and gives beneficial results. You get an excellent product made and the readers get their value for money through high quality material. This is definitely a win-win situation where you, the freelancer and the client, all are benefited.

So, happy being a Ghost!

Plagiarism Checker

Here's a resource for you. Ever wonder if that non-paying client took your words and ran? The Plagiarism Checker, a project of the University of Maryland, will search for your article, for free. Copyscape is another low-cost option. Of course, you could also just plug a unique phrase from your article into Google, and see what comes up!

Newspaper journalism - makings of a freelance writer

In this business you have to be ready and alert. You have to keep in touch with people in the industry, you have to make sure your name remains fresh in their minds, you have to keep on plugging away at keeping that contact book up to date, adding to it, and maintaining friendships. This is a business that functions, to an extent, on “who you know” rather than “what you know”, and it doesn’t hurt to keep that in mind. You need to keep up with the people you met throughout your journalism career, whether they are fellow reporters, editors, or the woman who used to empty the rubbish bins at the end of the night.

The fact remains: for a freelance writer, there’s no rush greater than publication. You have to keep at it. Remember that for every query you send to an editor, they probably received one hundred others. You’re up against a lot of competition, but sometimes sheer persistence pays off. Remember, it was the tortoise that won the race: keep chipping away at it, keep on sending in those queries, know that it can only get easier.

A little-known fact for you: in newspaper journalism, excellent writing isn’t the most important quality to have. That’s what sub-editors are there for. I also do it by being persistent. You need a thick skin to be a freelance writer. You spend a lot of time being rejected, being snubbed, and even being ignored. What many editors are looking for are writers who will respond instantly, file copy on time, get the facts right, and get the story. Being always-on call may not be the most relaxing way to live, but it’s one way to make sure that the editor who just commissioned you for one story will come back for more.

To know more read through the archives on this blog page and select what is important to you.

Your blog freelance writing has a huge impact

Customers often do not realize the value their reviews have to local business owners who use the reviews to learn more about who their potential clients are. Since URateLocal brings local people together, it can also be used to network offline. This ability to form an outside community of people who share the same tastes in art, music, food, and recreation represents a new era in Web 2.0.

URateLocal is a peer review database where people can rate customer and seller reviews on local services while earning money for contributing their own reviews. The site is designed so people can browse reviews of the most popular venues in their area by review and reviewer ranking, tags, and more. The growing URateLocal community determines the popularity of a review by rating it according to its usefulness. It is a system where customers benefit from each others experiences. The site also enables more collaboration between customers and business owners by allowing business owners to link to any customer review for free.

Customers have used URateLocal to search local services in their area and plan trips and meetings away from home while business owners have used its capability as a trending tool to make improvements to their business model. Customers can earn extra income through URateLocal’s profit share program in which they earn money through Google Adsense. Users who post reviews can now get compensated for helping the growing Urate community make more informed choices when it comes to choosing the best college, finding the most reliable health care provider, or finding the most exciting entertainment venue. The site operates on the principle that those who benefit from other user reviews can help the author of that review make money by commenting on it or recommending it. Reviews that are ranked high by the URateLocal community stay in the database longer and can be featured on the front page where their reviews can be seen by a much bigger audience.

Customers often do not realize the value their reviews have to local business owners who use the reviews to learn more about who their potential clients are. It is recommended that when members register, they include all their demographic info which will help local business owners help them in a system the Urate team likes to call the “Circle Of Progress”. While the demographic info helps local business owners market their services even before they have a location, customers will be the first to know when a service catering to them will open in their area. The more demographic info you provide, the more local business owners could use that information to attract the customers they want by tagging their reviews, adding pictures and videos, and posting links to URateLocal reviews on their homepage, blog, or any other site that allow button links. Through this “Circle of Progress”, URateLocal aims to bring customers together with the services that matter most to them.

For those with entrepreneurial dreams, URateLocal along with its product review counterpart URateStuff are the perfect place to test your product or service in a system that helps you target a demographic, find buyers and investors within the Urate community, or seek professional advice from business owners who update their member pages to include up to the minute bio and contact information. The data that is compiled on URateLocal and URateStuff are available to everyone and useful to those who do market research in their field of expertise.

URateLocal and URateStuff are the only review sites that allow users to post videos in their reviews. Customers can post video reviews and videos that detail their experiences using a product or service while sellers and business owners can post video ads in which they can be creative in how they choose to position their product. Sellers can also take advantage of the video format by posting live tutorials and using their personality to give their product or service more credibility.

More multimedia and web 2.0 features are currently in development at URateStuff and URateLocal to make it one of the most viral social networks for users looking to find others with similar interests. Users can make friends, subscribe to RSS feeds for automatic updates, and upload multimedia content. The site is featuring cities from the U.S. and Canada with more updates coming soon.

Get Freelance Work By Networking

When you think about networking, do you visualize a bunch of people standing around schmoozing, trying to pitch their services to each other while exchanging business cards and “elevator speeches”?

You know, some people actually enjoy that sort of thing. And when they do it right (which is a rare talent), they reap genuine rewards. Rewards such as new clients, joint venture partners, knowledgeable advisors, helpful friends… in other words, mutually beneficial relationships.

But for many of us, the idea of going to a networking event ranks right up there with bathing an angry cat. Even if we think it ought to be done, we’d rather be flea food.

Don’t worry. There’s much more – and less – to networking than you think! You can reap the same wonderful rewards without having to mingle with a bunch of strangers.

Important: With any kind of networking, the key is to build powerful relationships by giving. Give your attention, advice, ideas, suggestions, support, compliments, referrals – and maybe even your business – to others. Give, give, give… then receive more than you can imagine!

There are many ways you can get freelance work by networking, even if you hate schmoozing. Below are four powerful examples.

1. Tell your family and friends about your freelance writing services.

This seems like a no-brainer, but you’d be amazed at how many people fail to do this.

You don’t have to pitch your services to your family and friends, but you certainly should not be keeping them secret! You’ll have many opportunities during normal conversations to mention that you enjoy writing and even earn a little money doing it for clients. Just plant the seed and eventually it can grow into unexpected business.

And remember, even if your family and friends have no need for a freelance writer, it’s very likely that they know someone who does. For example, maybe your sister’s hair stylist owns the salon and could use some help with her marketing materials.

Key: Every person has connections to an average of 250 other people. When you decide not to mention your services to cousin Annie and neighbor Tom, you’re missing an opportunity to offer your services to hundreds of people they know!

2. Engage in virtual networking.

You do this online, from the comfort of your home office. Besides the benefits of not having to deal with people face-to-face, virtual networking allows you to create contact lists and join online communities comprised of people from all over the world. Most of these people you would probably never meet in any other way. Your virtual network can grow larger and faster than any form of traditional network.

Are you on someone’s email list? (Of course you are!) When they ask for opinions, give yours. When they raise an issue that’s of interest to you, send them a response about it. If they’re selling something you can benefit from (and it fits your budget), buy it – then give them positive feedback about it.

Key: Become someone they know and enjoy hearing from, rather than just one of the many anonymous names on their mailing list.

Participate in online discussion forums, especially those where your ideal clients hang out. Lurk before you leap so you don’t jump in and accidentally make a fool of yourself (not good for winning clients). Read the posts, get a feel for the ambiance. When you have something worthwhile to contribute, start participating. If the forum rules allow it, include a signature block that has a link to your website. But do NOT sell your services! Give valuable advice freely. The idea is to show your knowledge, expertise and desire to help others.

Key: Eventually the forum members will get to know you, like you and trust you. The next natural step for them is to think of you when they (or people in their network) need the freelance writing services you provide!

3. Show off your talent.

Write, write, write! Submit articles to online article directories, write reports and/or ebooks, create your own website and e-zine – put yourself and your writing skills on display, always including your contact information. When appropriate, offer to provide free special reports or articles for people with whom you’re building connections through your virtual networking activities.

Consider giving free writing workshops through your local Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club or other groups. If you have a job, check into offering “brownbag” (lunchtime) sessions on topics such as “10 Tips for More Effective Business Writing” for your coworkers.

Key: You want to become the obvious person people will think of when they need writing services.

4. Attend seminars.

What types of seminars, workshops, conferences or meetings do your ideal clients attend? Go to those events. For example, if you want to write website content, attend internet marketing seminars. They are networking goldmines and offer many opportunities to engage in natural conversations with people you want to meet. You don’t have to schmooze or pitch your services. Just be friendly, ask questions, participate in discussions, and be yourself.

Key: You’ll not only learn about the specific issues and topics your target clients are interested in, you’ll build relationships with them at the same time!

How can I recognize a work at home scam?

There are a few rules of thumb that I go by to determine if a work from home opportunity is legitimate.

1. Does it seem too good to be true? If someone is promising a lot of money, for little work - or it seems flavored to be a 'get rich quick' scheme, count me out.

2. Do they require money for more 'information' about the opportunity. Or do they require a down payment for materials (such as the envelope stuffing schemes, and other build crafts at home schemes.)

3. Do thorough research on any home business opportunity you consider joining. There are some legitimate ones though. But it takes a certain type of person to make these types of business opportunities work.

Your blog your money - earn it!

These days many across the world are relying on Internet. Whenever anyone wants to find out about products and services the simple and easiest research takes place on the Internet. For those who are newbees and have heard of earning from the net can sound 'wow' 'can I do this?'. At first it sounds exciting. You do want to believe it ofcourse. After all it is what sounds easy, fast and 'reachable' sounds great!

It is necessary to have a web presence - in a positive manner.

Lets see basics of making your blog a success

Good content – this is a must, a pre-requisite

Continuous good content – this is a must, a pre-requisite

First of all, Blog Rush is clearly a part of a traffic generation strategy. To know what is Blog Rush see on Your right hand side – scroll down. Yes, this very page that you are reading. You will see that there is this little block called blogrush. Yes this is Blog Rush. This is how it looks. And this is what it does too.

But you have to gain people’s attention FIRST.

To get someone’s attention with Blog Rush, the primary thing you need to do is write COMPELLING 7 WORD HEADLINES (or approximately no more than 40 characters including spaces). This guarantee’s your whole headline will be syndicated in Blog Rush’s widget without getting cut-off. Several common mistakes I’ve seen already is people who are:

  • Writing LONG headlines which get cut-off before you can understand the topic of the post.
  • Crafting headlines, which only make sense if you’ve read the post before you’ve read the headline.
  • Not taking the time to create interesting headlines that people care about.

To write a good “I’VE GOTTA READ THAT” Blog Rush headline, you must follow these simple rules:

  1. Keep it simple. Don’t use “slash” multi word variations of the same thing like “authority/expert”. This is not only confusing to read, but it also takes up valuable character space.
  2. Appeal to everyone’s ADD. People are clicking on Blog Rush story links because they are goofing off and want to be distracted. So play to that and write things that sound juicy and entertaining.
  3. Never forget that everyone cares about himself or herself. Try and make all your headlines relevant to the readers self interest. People who want to be distracted can then rationalize that they are REALLY learning something if they click on a link which is supposedly work related.
  4. Don’t lie in your Blog Rush headline. People will not only hit the “back” button faster then greased lightning if your story doesn’t deliver on what the headline promised, but they will be FAR LESS LIKELY to click on your future headlines.

Ok, so once you’ve gotten some traffic from Blog Rush, you want to turn that traffic into leads. That is, people who keep reading your blog and eventually buy something from you.

Sadly this is much harder than it sounds. As most people who are successful with social “stimulus” media will attest, many people who read your story are Social Media Stimulation Sluts who will be off to get their next hit before you can get the words “RSS Button” out of your mouth.

So, we must play to the readers stimulus seeking nature to keep them on our own blogs.

To do this, we need two things:

  1. The “Related Posts” Plugin, and
  2. Other Post “Crack” stories.

To understand this better see on top of this page. This very page that you are reading. Do you see video clippings? Yes people like to watch videos more than mere readings most of the time. This ensures and little break and your visitor on page will ‘hang’ around more.

If you follow the same formula I just gave you on how to write Blog Rush headlines, to write your Blog Headlines, you’ll be going in the write [right] direction.

- Then, just keep going at it until you get traction.

Also, in closing here are some other mistake’s to avoid:

  1. Don’t put the Blog Rush widget above your own site’s navigation
  2. Get rid of those RIDICULOUS social media links at the bottom of every post. The only people who have the power to get any of your posts ranking well in Social Media Networks don’t need the little buttons to do it. If they think you’re worthy, they’ll submit regardless. And those 2 Diggs you got could have been other actions which resulted in a MUCH BIGGER payoff. It’s a waste of blog real estate to have those buttons.

Check out the site ratings that you will find on this very page on your right hand side. This reflects the visitors it enables you to know how much more marketing you are to do. So that you get more visitors.

Search from the vast ‘ARCHIVE’ section just here on your right hand side of this page: here to know what you want to read. Read what benefits you. Have a good life.

Avoid Scam & Junk Sites

Many sites out there promise e-mails worth $50 and upwards. DO NOT join any of these sites as they are designed to take your money without ever giving you a penny in return.
Before you do anything, check out places like PTR Investigator which maintains a list of all these junk sites, and avoid them like the plague!. Use the PTR site to keep updated on potential new junk sites.

Avoid Spyware & Unwanted Software Installations
Some sites can install software silently in the background after you've visited them and you may not realise this until you have rebooted your computer. Avoiding Spyware is never 100% guaranteed, but there are a few things you can do to help yourself prevent this and other malicious software being installed on your machine. Here are some recommended things Windows users should have:

Use Mozilla Firefox instead of Internet Explorer
IInternet Explorer is the biggest browser in the world, but it's also the weakest when it comes to avoiding these attacks, and until IE 7 is released to the general public, steer clear. The ideal is to use a tabbed browser, which will allow you to use several tabs within the same window, making browsing much more organized.
This browser has the capability to stop malicious websites installing software on your machine so is much less prone to getting caught out. It is tabbed and is customizable, so you can make it look more to your taste too.

Microsoft Anti-spyware
This is a tool from Microsoft that offers real-
time protection against websites trying to change things on your machine, as well as catching spyware before it is able to get itself a nest!
Microsoft will throw money at this until it's the biggest around. It's free, and definitely well worth having.

A Good Anti-Virus Software Package

  • Something like Norton Antivirus or Macfee will help protect your computer. It’s worth the money to invest in a good one to keep your computer up to date and protected.

Tips to make money online...

  • Get Organized -
Setup a dedicated e-mail account for your Get Paid programs; one large enough to hold a few days of e-mails without filling up. Watch out for harsh filters that may stop e-mails from arriving. Owners usually delete you if your e-mail box bounces. Yahoo is useful and popular but not all programs will except it.
  • It is essential to take screen shots of your earnings, as proof in case the owner loses the database. To take a screen shot: open MS Word (or other word processor) then hit the PrtSc (Print Screen) button on your keyboard, then paste the contents. Save this document in a safe place (where you can find it).
  • Create a folder in your browser favorites, for your Get Paid programs. This makes it easy to log on and check the above statistics.
  • Use Roboform, to save time entering the same old details, and to save your user ID and passwords. Note: The latest version limits you to 30 free passcards, but the earlier, simpler version is unlimited.
  • Join payment programs to receive your payments. Egold and Paypal.
  • Read The E-mails -
obvious, but needs to done. Don't wait too long - some e-mails will expire quickly. If you don't read, you won't earn cash/points. Some program owners will delete you if you do not read e-mail for more than a week. That is why they invented holiday settings. Be aware of "English-checkers" - special links that may cause your account to be deleted. So many people try to cheat that owners have been forced to put extra links in to make sure the text is being read.
  • Also read the non-paid e-mails. It supports the advertisers, and without them, there is no income. Non-paid e-mails usually reward you with points that you can use for your own advertising. And basically, do unto others as you would be done by...... you'd want people to read your non-
    paid e-mails, wouldn't you?
  • Visit the Site -
Taking advantage of your ‘Favourites' button, visit the sites daily if you can, to check for updates, and mainly, to click on the Paid to Click section. This can speed up your earnings incredibly.

Guiding Principles for Blogging it big and good

  • Be sincere
  • Focus on the individuals
  • Not all about you
  • Be part of the community
  • Everyone’s a peer

Strategy and Vision

Blogs are still just another piece of the corporate communications puzzle (although an increasingly important piece), so spending some quality time thinking about what you want to achieve with your overall communication strategy and how blogging fits into that strategy is a good place for companies to start. You don’t want to use your blog to just pimp your products or talk about press releases. A blog can be used for so much more. Think about the areas where you want to lead the industry and the topics that you want people to think about when they think of your company. Use your blog to become a thought leader in the industry by sharing your expertise on those broad topics that are important and relevant to your company.

Think about who should be blogging on your corporate blog. It is easy to pick your top 5 executives, and give them access to the blog. In some cases, they might be the perfect people, but they aren’t always the best choice when it comes to accomplishing your goals for the blog. Go back to your discussion about your strategy for the blog and the topics that you want people to think about when they think of your company or your products. Who in your company has expertise in those areas? Do you have someone with great ideas? Are there any evangelists or other employees passionate about those topics? If so, recruit those people to contribute to your blogs. Someone passionate and smart, but outside of the senior management ranks probably has more time to spend on the blog and might just come up with some innovative and interesting ideas.

You should also branch out a little into the realm of unofficial / personal blogs. Encourage your employees to have their own blogs where they talk about their areas of expertise.

Having a personal blog has a number of benefits, including giving us an excuse to learn and research new ideas.

Making it Happen

After the initial excitement wears off, it is easy for companies to neglect the corporate blog. We just forget to blog, and before long, no one has posted in a month (or two or three …) In some companies this isn’t a problem. If you already have a bunch of prolific bloggers neglect may not be an issue, but for the rest of you, and you know who you are, it really helps to have someone “in charge” of the blog. This person isn’t responsible for writing all of the content, but they can responsible for herding and nagging in addition to making sure that some specific strategic topics are being addressed on the blog

The Other Details

Blogroll. While the content of the posts is the most important part of the blog, do not neglect the other little details that can make a difference. Make sure your blog contains a blogroll linking to other bloggers you respect; not to have one is really bad form. Link to the people that you read, the other thought leaders in your industry, and other blogs that your employees write in your blogroll. This goes for your personal / unofficial blogs, too. All blogs should have one, and if you don’t want to put it in a sidebar, you can create a separate page devoted to your blogroll.

Sidebars. Spend some quality time thinking about your sidebars. Add items that make it easy for people to find older content on your blog: search, tag cloud, recent posts, popular posts, etc. Don’t forget to include links back to other key parts of your website including information about products, press releases or other news, and events where people can find you. Include some fun stuff in the sidebar, too (Flickr photos, twitter posts, etc.) Don’t let your sidebars get too cluttered, but do make sure that you include helpful, relevant, and interesting content in them.

Analytics. You will want to know how many people read your blog, and exactly what they are most interested in reading. Make sure that you install some kind of analytics package; for example, Google Analytics is free and easy to embed. This will tell you where your visitors came from and which posts they are reading. You can use this information to determine what people are most interested in. Don’t forget to also pay attention to your RSS feeds for those people seeing your content in RSS readers. Do not use your blogging tool’s default RSS feeds as your primary blog feeds. Always run them through a service that provides more information and statistics about who is reading your blog. Feedburner is a great (and free) tool to get more information about the people subscribing to your feeds.

Hopefully, these tips will help a few people make their corporate blogs even better. Keep in mind that you will make mistakes along the way. Learn from them, keep writing, and continue to make incremental improvements.

Corporate blogging is a complex topic, and there will never be one magic formula that applies to all companies.

Web freelance writing opportunities

Before the internet age, freelance writing was an almost unknown profession. Access to information on any subject was limited to books, periodicals and magazines, and communication was often slow and dependent on the pace of snail mails. But with this burgeoning new medium, flying solo as a writer has become an attractive option. As an independent professional, you get to be your own boss and enjoy all the advantages it entails; or, you could even do it part-time.

Here are a few of the opportunities open to you if you are a good wordsmith and can sell your talent to the right markets:

Web Content Writer: This is an entry-level position that can easily be found by trawling the web for freelance job sites, forums and blogs. While it does not pay much initially, it is a great way to create a writer’s portfolio with articles that have been credited to you. You can take it from there to break into higher- paying job markets like magazine features and newspaper columns.

Being a web content writer can get you lucrative ghostwriting opportunities, not to mention positions like those of a telecommuting researcher or a writing assistant for publishing houses. You could end up as a travel, health, fashion, automobile or entertainment writer, to name just a few general categories. Each category has a spectrum of opportunities all its own.

In addition, becoming a web content writer paves inroads into creating and monetizing websites. Many web writers either launch websites and blogs of their own on niche subject areas, or partner with a website owner for this purpose. Done well, this could be a great way of generating revenue.

Blogger and forum poster: This could be an interesting niche, which is not very high-paying but may help build a network of clients, fellow writers and editors. A lot of websites are looking for knowledgeable writers to post regularly on their blogs and forums, because that is a great way of bumping up web traffic and marketing products. Once you have a specialized niche for blogging though, you can write for established and well-paying organizations.

Copywriter: If you have a way with words and feel confident about persuading someone to buy a service or product purely on the basis of your write-ups, then you could create your own well-paid gig as a copywriter. A copywriter creates hard-hitting material which can be used for marketing purposes in the form of online web content, newsletters or press releases.

Resume writer: There is an increasing demand for professional writers who specialize in creating targeted, well-presented resumes. If you feel you have a knack for human resources as well as writing, this could be the calling for you.

Technical writer: If you have an engineering background or are simply fascinated by all kinds of technologies, procedures and products, you could become a technical writer. You could happily spin out tutorials, procedures and product reviews and get paid to do it.

Freelance writing can be more than just a meal ticket. It has the potential of becoming an enjoyable and rewarding profession in its own right. If your day job frustrates you or you simply want some extra income, take the plunge and write your first article or blog post today.

Tips for Dealing With Your Editor

Despite the fact that you may spend 4-14 hours per day typing away in isolation, writers don’t live in a vacuum all the time. Once you break into the freelance writing world, one of your main contacts is likely to be editors. These are the people that dole out assignments, accept finished work and likely provide direction. It is in your best interest to proactively manage the writer-editor relationship. Here’s some simple ways to make sure you’re doing your part.

Take Responsibility.
Despite the editor’s role in your writing, the writing is still your job. Turn in the most flawless work you can. Seek answers to your own questions. Find and use the best research and resources available to you. In this way the editor is like your boss: make their job as easy as possible, and they’re likely to return the favor.

Understand Where They’re Coming From.
It is the editor’s job to protect the final product, whether that product be a magazine, a website or a company’s marketing materials. The editor isn’t out to get you- he/she is out to produce the most perfect final product possible. Understanding the editor’s job will go a long way toward making your job more pleasant. Accept their feedback, make the revisions and get on with your life. No one wins a power struggle!

Communicate. . .And Do It Well.
This is probably the number one thing a writer can do toward making an editor-writer relationship work. Understand the editor’s needs, the company’s needs and the product you are providing. Procure all the information you need to do your job well. Ask questions, listen for answers, and take direction well. These are all part and parcel of communicating with your managing editor.

Incorporating these simple strategies into your relationships will help you to work well with your editor, resulting in a positive experience for both of you.

Top 6 Rules for Networking

1. Include Everyone You Know on Your Network

When it comes to networking everyone you know can be a useful contact. While someone may not be directly involved in your field, he or she may know another person who is.

2. Be Willing to Ask for Help

In order to get help you have to ask for it. Don't be shy. If you need advice call someone on your network.

3. Be Willing to Give Help

Your network doesn't exist only for your benefit. You should be willing to offer your help to others as well. So, if someone on your network asks you to speak to his nephew about your job, you must be willing to do it. If you hear news that someone on your network can benefit from take the time to share it.

4. Don't Use Your Network for Only Job Hunting

Many people have the misconception that networking is only for job hunting. They attempt to utilize it only when looking for work. Well, guess what? If you only get in touch with your contacts when you are looking for work, your network may dry up. Not only that — your contacts may come to know you as "that person who's always looking for a job."

5. Keep in Touch With Your Network Contacts

Check in with your contacts every now and then. Find out what they're up to and let them know what is happening with your career. It will be much easier to track someone down after not talking to them for a couple of months than it will be after being out of touch for a year or longer.

6. Thank Your Contacts for Their Help

When one of your contacts gives you advice or provides you with a job lead don't forget to send her a thank you note. You can use email to do this.

Submit flawless, polished documents

You need to submit flawless, polished documents, but the demands on your time are great and lead to typos and regular “oops” moments. The solution? Create a revision system and stick to it. Here’s a sample.

  1. Start Beforehand. The secret to consistently catching your mistakes is to know exactly what those mistakes are. Begin by setting aside a document, Blackberry memo screen or even a simple notebook in which to note recurring mistakes. Doing this gives you a self check list, which we’ll revisit in a moment.
  2. Use Technology. Immediately after you finish a document, run a simple grammar and spell check. I’m not advocating a complete dependence on these methods by any means, but use them to catch the most glaring of mistakes and typos.

Walk Away. Now, I know (trust me, I know) that you might not feel that you can afford the time to walk away.

But it’s necessary. In a pinch, you can start working on your next project, but in reality it is best to clear the air for a bit.

  1. Use Your List. Remember the list you’ve been making for the past couple months [mentioned in point: Start beforehand]? The one we referenced in step #1? Now is the time to get it out and start checking. I’ve even known some writer to format their list with checkboxes, make multiple copies, and keep a cache of them ready to go.
  2. Do a Read Aloud. You’ll want to either read aloud yourself, or use software designed to read your words back to you.
  3. Get a Second Opinion. I like to have an up and coming proofreader on retainer to provide my second set of eyes, but in a pinch, a spouse or cube mate works just as well.
  4. Print It Out. My last step is always a final read over with a hard copy. In fact, I often change rooms in order to complete my last revision. By mixing it up and getting out of your comfort zone, you can jog your brain enough to find that one last elusive little typo.
That’s it. Of course not every system is right for every writer. Find what works for you, and stick to it!

Freelance writing requires more trafficking to your own blog too!

One important topic for blog owners is how to increase traffic, which is easier than it seems, once you know how. In this article, we cover 7 specific methods of increasing traffic to your blog.

Tip #1: Sign up for pinging services
It seems pretty obvious, but many bloggers, even those who are more experienced, don’t sign up for pinging services. If you’re new to blogging, pinging means that when your blog is updated, a “ping” is sent out by the service to let pinging sites know that your blog has been updated. People who are visiting sites with pinging services will then see your blog flash across the side of the screen as “newly updated.” Pinging services include Yahoo’s blogs, weblogs.com, Google Blog search and ZingFast.

Tip #2: Sign up for Technorati
If you go to technorati.com, you’ll see an option on the left side of the screen to “Claim Your Blog.” Doing so allows you to get updated link counts, add your photo or branding to Technorati and see your Technorati link. Having your blog claimed on Technorati helps to increase traffic because the millions of people who go to that site will have a chance to see your blog listed there.

Tip #3: Sign up for FeedBurner, an RSS service
FeedBurner basically helps you to promote your blog’s content, and to build and measure your audience.

Tip #4: Bookmark your blogs at places like del.icio.us
You can set up an account and profile at del.icio.us. From there, you can add links to your blog, as well as excerpts. When a user visits your profile on del.icio.us, they will see a link to your blog and excerpts. There are other social bookmarking sites that you can use in much the same way. All of these social bookmarking sites can help you increase traffic.

Tip #5: Post comments at other blogs
Here, you should visit similar blogs to your own, post legitimate comments and then sign your name(along with a link to your blog). This way, people know you aren’t there just to promote your site—you’re there to post a good piece of feedback and also say where you’re from.

Tip #6: Ask owners of other blogs to post a link to yours
Find other blogs that are similar to yours. If they seem to be decently popular (if they have a good amount of comments for each post), contact the owner of the blog and ask if they will add a link to your blog. Offering to link back to their blog is a way to sweeten the offer. Reciprocal linking helps to increase traffic.

Tip #7: Use keywords in your blog
Like regular Web pages, having a good keyword density on a blog is a terrific way of getting search engine spiders to notice your page. (FYI: Search engine spiders are programs from search engines that browse sites and report back their findings to the search engine database, which then lists that site. The more keywords on your site, the more likely it is for a search engine spider to pay a visit)

If your average blog posting is around 200 words, use 2-6 keywords per blog post. This creates a keyword density of between 1 and 3 percent, a respectable number. Remember that you don’t want to use too many keywords, as that will make your blog look bad. Also be sure that the keywords used are relevant to your blog. Before even making a blog posting, decide what the post will be about and then select a keyword or two to use in your post. This will help to increase your traffic.

Brain exercise

You need lots of skill to get your writing to a higher level. This is feasible. Yes very much possible.

The keyword here is exercise. So, how does one do this?

Just the way you need to do exercise to maintain and enhance your body, similarly, for the brain you need brain exercise.

What is brain exercise? Simply put it is a constant effort to keep your brain active and ‘in shape’. What this means is that the cells in the brain need to have a good interchange of fluids.

Writing requires the interaction of various parts of your brain. This interaction isn’t developed without practice, nor does the interaction stay constant unless you consistently practice.

The reason it works is because writing is a skill that you get better at with only by practice. And writing consistently to a certain level builds your writing muscles.

This takes place when you write an “article a day”. Just write an article a day, of around 400 to 800 words, every day for a week. At the end of the seven days you will be a better writer. You’ll write much more easily too. You will soon notice that you write better. The thoughts will flow with ease. What is interesting is that you will start to realise how you think and how to sort your thinking out to pen it. This is usually very helpful when facing deadlines. It prepares you to understand yourself and go about smoothly with your thoughts.

Not only does this give you good amount of material that you can sell, it also takes your writing skills to a new level.

How long should your articles be?

Aim for a reasonable length: around 600 to 800 words is good, but shorty articles of 250 to 500 words work too.

Happy writing!

What is resume writing

A prospective employer / organisation receives many resumes. It is essential that the resume you are sending stand out. It should be positive but definitely not hyping so much that it leads onto false claims.

Along with certain qualifications prospective employer / organisation seeks cultural fit too. They look out for candidates that fit the culture of their organisation. This factor stands to be important to them as well benefits you too. If you are at the right place that matches to your personality then you will find it easier to mix amongst your colleagues and bosses as well as less stressful too.

For this to happen what you need is a good introductory resume. It is an art to creating an effective resume.

This is what you as a freelance resume writer step in.

Resume writing can prove to be a fairly lucrative venture for anyone who is willing to take the time to talk to clients on an individual basis, creating unique resume designs that best suit the customer’s personality.

It’s important to stay up with the times, however, as what constitutes a conventional resume changes like the seasons.

The average person just doesn’t have time to keep up, but if you’re a professional freelance resume writer — it’s an added bonus if you do cover letters too — you can be in touch with the latest trends and produce some real winners.

All the best!

Write with abundance energy

Career is very important. The obvious reason is income and earnings but there are other reasons too. Like satisfaction, feeling of self-accomplishment, getting respect for us from others as well as having self respect.

A good career creates confidence and a feeling of well-being. For this you need to have a good electromagnetic field around you. What you need to do is energise your career corner according to Feng Shui. This will help you in gaining abundance in career.

Enhancing careers with Feng Shui is a popular subject in Feng Shui. It is second to generating wealth, energizing the career sector ranks high in interest among those interested in using Feng Shui to better their lives.

It makes sense due to the amount of time we spend at our jobs. So whether you are at your desk at office or at home you need to have a consistency in your positive electromagnetic fields. It also is understandable because to have a successful career enables us to make better decisions for ourselves and our families.

It doesn't always necessarily mean that you simply make more money. Money by itself doesn't ensure or solve all the ills of career problems. Of course, it doesn't hurt though making money. However, there are plenty of people out there making good salaries but unhappy with their respective careers.

When you energize areas that you would like to improve or enhance on, it's possible to open up a range of possibilities. For instance, by energizing your career sector, your job may suddenly become better, or something new and better will be coming to you that you hadn't expected at all, such as a business opportunity.

But this is the price of making changes -- you get more changes in your life, and therefore, more choices! And, that's what you usually want in your life: more opportunities and choices to create greater happiness for yourself and your family.

There are two critical and very important areas to enhance if you want to improve your career: your house and your office. Apart from this you can have cures and enhancers on your self too.

Feng Shui application can be done with the help of Feng Shui charms and amulets. You can use crystals. You can use colors. They are known as Feng Shui cures and enhancers.

Your Feng Shui cures do not have to be big, or centre of attraction. It need not be an expensive object. It can be simple and well placed in your home, office, work desk etc.

You can have your Feng Shui cures in smaller size and "on-the-go" to constantly work on your personal energy, as well as surround you with a subtle aura of protection.

It could be a ring, a pendant, a bracelet, a mobile hanging etc. it could be a decoration at home or in the office space. It can be a table top or a wall hanging.

It can be a color on the wall or desk. It could be a particular shade of a color that your personal energy responds to.

You can use these for a variety of purposes. Like for instance to strengthen your health, family harmony, to attract a better love relationship. To improve on opportunities for job or wealth creation.

When exploring the richness of the Feng Shui symbols, do not negate a Feng Shui cure just because it looks unusual or too exotic. You can have it hidden, as cures do not have to be in plain view, or you can find a similar Feng Shui cure from your own culture that would carry the same Feng Shui energy of good luck and protection.

This does not mean that if we have a money frog for example which indicates wealth symbolically in Feng Shui we do need to work any more. It certainly does not mean that wealth will accumulate on its own. No, in no way does it mean that we don’t do anything and await a ‘magical’ response.

What Feng Shui helps with is in ‘creating better opportunities’. This simply means that better opportunities will throw up. And we will be in the state to avail of these better opportunities.

Tools for the freelance writer on the net

As a freelance writer most of the time you may need to start at the bottom. Unfortunately, many a times, the freelance writer may not be able to make it to large amount of monies. This phase can be very tedious and frustrating. It is only after a lot of hard work and persuasion that you may begin to see the cash register ringing at a slow but consistent pace.

Hence, at the very initial stage itself you must first determine whether you can afford to start as a full-time freelancer or need to stay with your day job and supplement your income during your spare time.

You must also arrive at a deciding if you want to be a niche or a general topic writer. A niche writer specializes in a specific topic or category of writing. Here there are pros and cons of course. In niche you concentrate and can go to the depths of a particular subject that you may have chosen. For example, if you have experience in the mass advertising industry, you could specialize in writing on media and advertising campaign based topics. On the other hand the general topics allow you to touch various subjects. It all entirely depends on how you want to go about your writing business.

Yes, at all points remember that you are doing business. And people who get in touch with you are looking for professionalism and a professional attitude.

Have a business plan. This comprises of what is going to be your core offering. What kind of marketing will you do. And what kind of monies do you expect. Luckily as a freelance writer on the net you don’t have much of infrastructure cots expect for a pc and internet and maybe a printer.

Next most importantly is a place. Where will you work. It needs to be a comfortable place. At the same time your place should be such that it allows you to think and have ideation.

These days people prepare a PayPal account. For you to be in business you need a bank account that is accessible to most. For this PayPal is a good option as most publishers and editors go in for money transfer from here.

And this is just the beginning. Keep marketing yourself. Join forums and write articles. Read on the other postings in this same blog. You will know what is to be done.

Happy writing!

Article submission

Article submission is a great way to do propaganda about your business, your blog, your website, or yourself too.

If you are writing about your business or your blog a good authentic article fetches you a great number of traffic.

If you are writing about yourself then it gets you the ‘expertise’ value.

Many search engines crawl and hook onto the keyword and keyword phrases of a site to put it in their results list. If your content contains a good number of keywords and keywords phrases, your site gets a higher position in the search engine listings. Ofcourse this does not mean that you keep stuffing the article with key words and phrases just about unnecessary.

Content for certain subjects need indepth knowledge. This can be done with research. Today research is just a click away in most of the cases.

If you are bent on getting traffic to your site and you do not have the time to write the articles then you can take the help of ghost writers.

Keep in mind to not plagiarise. Copy and merely pasting of part or whole of the content is known as plagiarising. This is definitely not advised. If you don’t have the time or the right resources then wait. There is absolutely no need to hurry. Content is the key to getting the reader tuned into your article and retaining the reader too.

Almost all of the time a plagiarised article submitted will never be released. Add to it if you have an account with that particular website then a plagiarised article can lead to suspension of your account. So be very careful.

Coping with your 'writer’s block'

Writer’s block. This is a situation that almost all writers go through sometime or the other.

Usually this condition takes place at the start of a writing project. Once you have crossed this block then it is back to smooth sailing. The main task for us writers is to tackle this block. First thing first. Accept it. Realising and accepting it is crossing 25% of the condition and moving towards the smooth writing stage.

Over a period of time you will learn how to realise it just as it is about to take place. Having realised and accepted it the next stage is to tackle it.

What do you prefer and how best you are comfortable is the question. You have to figure out if you are more comfortable on the computer or first on paper. Where can your thoughts pour out. Make this position clear within yourself.

Next is to understand the surrounding environment. Do you like noise, sitting at the balcony, coffee shop, or generally TV or music going on in the background. Or pin drop silence. In what situation does your mind start to function better.

Try to write whatever comes to your mind. The palace you are at. The thoughts that are chatting in your mind. The color of your room. Simply put, whatever comes to your mind pen it. Put it down. You never know these musing could come handy later on.

Hopefully by now you start getting focussed.

Similarly a block can come in-between the writing project. Suddenly you find yourself either not thinking anything or probably thinking too much to be organised. This is the right time to take a break. Do something else. Watch TV., listen to music, chat with someone. Simply put just move away from your workstation. Then come back again. You should feel refreshed by now.

And continue to write. Happy writing!

Email Etiquette

For most people who have access to personal computers, email has rapidly overtaken ‘snail mail’ as the preferred means of sending written communication, both business and personal. The near-immediate delivery and low cost of email are hard to beat, but the technology does have limitations when it comes to typographic finesse. Here are some dos and don’ts to ensure that your electronic communication is received with its message intact.

Fonts and Formatting
It’s tempting to format outgoing email with different fonts, point sizes and colors, and to punch up your text with the use of italics and boldface. Unfortunately, what you send is not necessarily what your recipient gets. Some email programs don’t read special formatting, including fonts that your reader’s computer doesn’t have. And many allow the user to set preferences for plain text instead of rich text, which includes styling. The result: your carefully formatted email is reduced to plain text, or worse, littered with ‘alien’ characters (more on that below).

What’s the solution? First, stick to system fonts, such as Arial, Times, Verdana, Trebuchet or Geneva, which virtually all users have. And, unless you’re certain that the recipient can read your formatting, keep it simple and use only keyboard characters and styling that won’t get lost in translation. For emphasis, try surrounding your important text with *asterisks*. ALL CAPS is another option, but one to be used sparingly. Remember that CAPS are considered SHOUTING in the cyberworld!

Article directories

Article directories have a big job—every day, thousands of authors and want-to-be authors submit their articles to these directories. These authors aren’t seeking payment, but rather a link back to their site, exposure for themselves as writers and for their websites. It’s a scratch-my-back-and-I’ll-scratch-yours society. Many of the articles that are submitted to these directories are not articles at all, but rather blurbs of nothingness with little content and usually lacking readability. The revenue from Adsense for the article directory Web sites can be substantial, but only if they have quality articles posted on their site and if they can get it up quickly.

There is of course Spam to these article directory Web sites as well—repeat articles submitted one after another or copied-and-pasted content that has been plagiarized from the Internet and another author. This Spam and plagiarism scam is the bane of article directories and the editors that run them.

Article directories are looking for articles—if your article hasn’t been accepted, it’s likely for a good cause. The articles that should be submitted to an article directory should reflect your best work—remember, you are putting your name and your link to your Web site on the work, and the people who are looking at it could want to commission you to do more work for them.

The articles themselves should be clear and concise, error free and well-written. Don’t get verbose on the bane of your own existence or the antics of your dog—save these rants for your blog and keep them off the article directory sites. Your article should be lengthy, at least 400 words and definitely not less than 250 words. Anything less than this suggests a lack of thought by the author and a cheap attempt to get their name in lights with a link-back to their site without sharing anything meaningful.

It is also important to note that adult material, gambling and pharmacy content are against the terms of service of Google Adsense. Editors at article directories are careful to delete these types of articles that are submitted so as to not lose their Google Adsense account and revenues.

All in all, it is highly important to output quality articles that are informative and well-written. These types of articles are much more likely to get through onto the article directory. Avoid plagiarizing materials from the Internet at all costs—most of the larger article directories and even some of the newer, smaller ones run the copy you submit through Copyscape to scan for plagiarism. Editors at article directories are constantly barraged with emails from irate authors who claim their content has been plagiarized—the usual course of action for the editors is to delete the article completely.

Article directories are very popular and are consistently gaining in popularity as well as more and more Web sites pop up on the Internet every day in hopes of making a few dollars. Articles are used by Web site owners to increase their readership; however, it is important to note that the more copies of the articles that appear on the Internet, the lower the search engine ranking can be for any particular Web site that uses it.

Content on Your Website or Blog

If you are looking to improve your rankings on the search engines then consider finding free content to add to your website. Good quality free content can help to optimize your website for search engines. Search engines are becoming more and more particular about site rankings, and looking for viable, real content. A content rich site will have a higher search engine ranking and page rank than one with minimal content. Also, your site will have more appeal to visitors and a better likelihood of providing good advertising revenue if you provide quality information and content.

Add relevant content to your site as it provides your users with interesting information and saves them leaving your site. Ample content will help ensure that your site visitors will stay, browse, and come back again and again. If you use advertising to bring in site revenue, having plenty of content will encourage your site visitors to spend more time on the site, and increase the likelihood of successful click through advertising on your site. Also, update your content frequently to help your site develop a pattern of regular repeat traffic.

Larger sites provide more instances of keyword rich phrases for visitors to come across whilst browsing than smaller sites. Good keyword saturation is another important search engine optimization tool. When search engines spider sites, they read keywords, and the more your desired keywords appear in your site, the better your overall search engine rankings. Think carefully about your desired keywords and work your site to optimize those words. While keyword rich text is a helpful search engine optimization tool, it is also critical that you make your content interesting, readable, and useful to your site visitors.

There are plenty of sites which offer free to re-use content such as Ezine articles and Article Alley. When searching out content for your site, look carefully at any requirements for use, and be certain that your site meets those requirements. Copyright infringement is a significant issue in the online community, and designing your site to respect international copyrights is critical. Content is free to use provided a link back is offered in return on many sites, and these sites are an excellent resource for any web site owner. Do read the articles you choose to add to your site, and see that they meet your needs, both in terms of content and keywords.

Alternatively you might add an RSS feed reader to your site and utilise a RSS feed. An RSS feed, which stands for “really simple syndication” or “rich site summary”, depending upon the version allows you to publish up to date new information easily. This automated technology can make adding fresh new content to your site an effortless process. A number of web based newsreader interfaces can be integrated into your site to allow your visitors easy access to new and up to date content on a regular basis.

Provided the content you add closely matches the theme of your page then you should see a benefit. Avoid adding content that is not relevant to your site, and consider choosing content for your site that matches your desired keywords for ideal search engine optimization. Always consider the value of the content to your customers and visitors rather than adding for the sake of it. A site that appeals to a human visitor, offers ample and useful content, and is a product of thought and hard work will appeal to search engines as well. Your efforts will be rewarded with a good search engine ranking and good publicity for your new site.

Article writing on the net

Writing articles should be about something you know and can talk about, that is why if you own a website, you probably are knowledgeable about the topics and themes of your websites. When writing your articles, you will not have a hard time because you already know the material well. Making your articles creative and interesting is the important part.

To ensure that your articles get read and enjoyed, these read hot tips should be followed to make your articles readable and interesting.

a) Using short paragraphs. When the paragraphs are very long, the words get jumbled in the mind of the reader just looking at it It can get quite confusing and too much of a hard work to read. The reader will just quickly disregard the paragraph and move on to much easier reading articles that are good to look at as well as read. Paragraphs can be a single sentence, sometimes even a single word!

b) Using bullets or numbers to stress points. As each point is stressed out, numbers and bullets can quickly make the point easy to remember and digest. As each point, tip, guide or method is started with a bullet or point, readers will know that this is where the tips start and getting stressed. Format you bullets and numbers with indentations so that your article will not look like a single block of square paragraphs. Add a little bit of flair and pizzazz to your articles shape.

c) Using sub headings to divide your paragraphs in the webpage. Doing this will break each point into sections but still would be incorporated into one whole article. It would also be easy for the reader to move on from one point to another; the transition would be smooth and easy. You will never lose your readers attention as well as the point and direction to where the article is pointing.

d) Write a good attention grabbing header or title. If your title can entice a person’s curiosity you are already halfway in getting a person to read your article. Use statements and questions that use keywords people are looking for. Provide titles or headers that describe your articles content but should also be short and concise.

e) Keep their interest from the beginning to the end of the article. From your opening paragraph, use real life situations that can be adopted by the reader. Use good descriptions and metaphors to drive in your point, just don’t over do it. Driving your examples with graphic metaphors and similes would make it easy for them to imagine what you are talking about. Making the experience pleasurable and enjoyable for them.

f) Use figures when possible and not just ordinary and insipid statements. Using specific facts and figures can heighten your article because it makes it authoritative. But do not make it too formal, it should be light and easy in them and flow.

With these red hot article writing tips your articles should make your articles readable and interesting.

As a freelancer showcase your expertise

A blog is the perfect venue to showcase your expertise. Sure, a resume and a portfolio of past works are also important, but a blog can give you an edge over the competition.

Clients will be impressed if they see that you are able to produce quality work. But they will be even more impressed if they see that you actually teach other people how to do so, too.

Lets take a look at the Search Engine Optimization market, for instance. There are literally thousands of SEO consultants on the Internet. The vast majority have a website outlining the offered services. A few of them, however, have blogs where they share SEO principles, tactics and techniques.

The blogs that contain the most accurate and useful information end up becoming “authorities” of the niche.

As a freelancer grow your network

There is an old business saying that goes like this: “It is not about what you know but who you know.” As a freelancer, this is particularly true. The difference between getting big projects knocking at your door and having to hunt down for cents here and there might come from your network.

Ideally you want to have as many people as possible aware of your work. Better yet, you want this people to endorse your work and refer it to their friends.

What a better tool for that purpose than a blog? Some time ago websites would communicate unilaterally. The website owner would publish some information and the visitors would absorb it. That was quite unbalanced, and it was difficult for relationships to blossom along the way.

Blogs, on the other hand, have many features that make this communication bilateral. Readers are able to comment and interact directly with the author and with fellow readers. Other bloggers are also able to interact with the author, creating a vast web of relationships.

This structure makes blogs almost perfect networking tools.

Getting your blog noticed on search engines

Part of blogging for profit is making sure you show up in search engine searches. There are a number of ways to make that happen. Some are simple and obvious, while others take a little know-how. So what should you do to get your blog blasted through the internet? Here are a few tips that may be able to help you show up higher on search engines and thus generate more traffic. You know what more traffic means, right? It means a better chance at making an extra buck with your blog.

First of all, as much as it may seem like a hassle, you need to do your own marketing. When you generate more traffic on your own, the search engines start to notice and your ranking will improve. The first thing you should do is get your blog registered everywhere you can register it. Go to all of the lesser search engines as well as the more popular ones and register the site everywhere you can. In addition, register with all of the blog directories you can find out there. You can barely log onto the internet without bumping into a blog directory. So, with that in mind, make sure that all of those have your blog in them so that those searching blogs will have a better chance of finding yours. Remember, this is about getting traffic and getting a search engine ranking. You can do neither if nobody knows you are out there in the first place.

It gets said over and over again regarding blogs, but make sure your content is high quality. That quality comes from writing in proper style. You should make sure your sentences are complete, when capitalization is needed make sure you do it, put your commas in the right place, and use periods. In addition, make sure you are putting interesting and useful information out there so that you will get as many return visitors as possible to your website. In addition to getting people to look at what you are saying, you want to get them coming back. If you want that search engine ranking, then you need to keep the hits to your site coming and coming often.

Another seemingly obvious thing you can do to drive up traffic and thus your search ranking is to update regularly. Make sure your blog is something you are caring for regularly, like you would anything else. People will come back if they know that new and fresh content could possibly be there. You should be posting at least once a day if not twice to ensure that new visitors are getting good content and that returning readers are seeing something fresh that makes them want to stay. Again, get those visits up and the search engine rankings will come right along with them.

You also want to make sure that when people log onto a search engine seeking out information that they find you as often as possible. To do that, you should make sure that many of your posts are search engine optimized. Have certain keywords and keyword phrases in mind as you start each post. When you go to revise, then, make sure they are appearing early in your post with frequency, and then sporadically throughout the rest of the post. This is an important move since most people on the internet find their information through the use of search engines. If you have specific phrases they are looking for then you are more likely to get more hits from those seeking information on the subjects about which you are writing.

If you are going to blog for profit, then it is crucial to get traffic to your site. To get traffic to your site you want to rank as highly as possible in search engines. There are a number of ways to get your ranking up, but it does require your dedication and work. First of all, make sure you do your own marketing. In one of those cruel twists of irony, the best way to get your traffic up is by getting your ranking higher and to get your ranking higher you need to get your traffic up. So register with blog directories and search engines, update your blog regularly, publish good clean content, and optimize your information with keywords and keyword phrases whenever possible without hurting the quality of your posts. Get that traffic up, market your site, and follow the simple tips above and you can blast the internet with your blog.

Effective Blogger

Even though all of us have ideas we would like to share, most people, for one reason or another, never find an opportunity to do so. Perhaps it's that, with out busy lives, we have no way to find those with whom we could begin a meaningful dialogue.

One way in which many, in the past, kept a permanent record of their thoughts, was through their writing. Diaries and journals have always been popular, especially among those who are reluctant to communicate through the spoken word.

Writing offers people a chance to express their most private thoughts, either keeping them private, or publishing them through various venues. Magazine, newspaper, and, of course, book publishers, have traditionally looked for material from private individuals. They may have different agendas for the materials they choose to present, but they are all in the business of keeping the public informed.

But now that the Internet has become the primary source of information in the Information Age, we have a way, through blogging, of communicating our thoughts more quickly, and to a wider audience, than ever before.

Blogs are Internet websites which allow people to publish their ideas. Blogs are available to anyone who has Internet access and a keyboard with which to communicate, and are often free to use.

Blogs get their name from the term "weblogs", and those who either begin, or maintain a blog, or add content to someone else's blog are "blogging". The articles in a blog are "posts", or "entries", and those who provide them are "bloggers".

The power of blogs, as a means of mass communication, should not be underestimated. Political candidates have found them extremely useful as campaigning tools; corporations use them as a way to judge public attitudes towards their behavior and products; and blogs can even give people a "gathering place" to develop the ideas capable of overthrowing governments and changing history.

If you would like to start your own blog, and want to get your ideas before a worldwide audience in very little time, here are some suggestions to get you on your way:

1. Run a search for "blog sites". There are lots of them available; some are free and some will charge you, usually by the month. They all offer different features, so you should look over a selection before deciding which blog site is best for you.

2. You will be able to keep your blog entirely private, allow just close friends and family to view it, or open it to the world. If you just want your blog to substitute for a diary, you may decide to keep it private. If you want it as a repository for your family's memories, you allow them access to share their activities or add photographs. And if you want it to be a soapbox for your ideas, you can make it public. You'll be able, on lots of sites, to password-protect the material in your blog so that only people to whom you give permission can view it.

3. You'll be able to decide on a colors scheme and layout for your blog. Even if you've never set up a website before, most blog sites have templates for page layouts and colors from which you can choose. If you are more experienced, you may be able to design your own.

4. When you've selected your layout, post some thoughts to your blog to see if you like the results. If not, tinker with it until you are satisfied. Depending on the number of features your blog site offers, you can create some very sophisticated effects.

5. When you are satisfied with your blog's appearance, you can send its URL--Internet address--to the people with whom you want to share your thoughts. If you have a website, you can post your blog's address there. You might also, if it's allowed, add your blog's address to posts you make in other blogs.

6. Keep your blog postings as professional as possible. Use your spell checker and give your readers interesting material to consider. There are thousands and thousands of blogs out there, so you need to provide people with reasons to come back to yours.

7. Avoid slang, and Internet abbreviations like "LOL" and "ROTFL" as much as possible. Many people do not know what those things mean and will not waste time trying to decipher them.

8. Regularly supply your blog with fresh ideas. Decide what reader base you are trying to attract, and provide them with things that will maintain their interest. You'll find yourself much more enthusiastic about writing when you know there is someone interested in what you have to say.

And, as mentioned previously, the sheer number of existing blogs may mean that it will take the Internet world some time to find yours. Don't get discouraged. Quality will tell.

Successful blogging requires both commitment and passion. You will have a golden opportunity, through your blog, to express your unique voice to the rest of the world. Let that voice sound loud and clear, and you will be heard!

Being a freelance writer

Being a freelance writer is not too difficult, but not too easy too!

There are broadly two types of freelance writers. One is the type who relies totally on their freelance work to pay their daily bills. The other is the type who looks at a freelance resource as extra money.

For both freelance work leads to:

  • Work whenever they wish
  • Choose the assignment they wish to work on

Both ways, this is not a method to get rich quick. It takes lots of thinking and writing firstly to develope a general skill for writing. Which normally is called a flair to write.

Writing can be for offline purpose and for online purpose. Ofcourse writing online is much easier in terms of logistics. Unlike offline writing there is no waiting for phone calls as such as mostly responses come back on the given email address.

There are various options for online and offline writing. But first you need to focus. What exactly are you going to write on. Is it a novel. What type of novel. Is it article. What category related. And so on. So first sit back and decide.

It is necessary to write where your passion leads you. As when tough times arrive it is only passion that can make you go on!

Submit a holiday review to the site and you earn points which can be redeemed for free products from their catalogue! You get 200 points just for joining, 50 for accepting their monthy newsletter and 55 for each Hotspot review with rewards starting at less than that it pays to check it out.

Review Centre

Write reviews of your best and worst experiences of the various shops and services you have used at Review Centre.

Dooyoo

Dooyoo pays you 0.03 every time another registered member reads your review and also awards bonus cash amounts to the best reviews received in a week. This site is Ciao's main European competitor but is currently undergoing a fair number of technical difficulties which appears to have lost them a large slice of their membership. The good thing is, you can use the opinions you wrote for Ciao on this site as well, just copy them over and get paid twice! You hold the copyright to them so there's no problem here. Minimum payout here is 50 (as opposed to 5 at Ciao) for cash or 20 if you want to redeem for shopping vouchers. If you're going to use Ciao then it's worth using this one as well.

Amazon

Yes, probably the most widely known consumer name on the internet also rewards its product reviewers with cash prizes every month. If you write a review at any of the Amazon sites around the globe and are the first to do so in that category, then you'll be entered into a sweepstake to win a monthly cash prize.

Epinions

Epinions is the granddaddy of all opinion sites. This American site is HUGE and has recently gone into partnership with Dealtime to offer even more features to its membership. Epinions rewards its members with what they call "income share" which basically means, if they make money as a direct result of your review, then you make money too. Umm, what this tends to mean is that, unless you write in the high profit areas such as new cars, new computer equipment etc. (and not the popular categories like books and movies) then you'll not make a dime for your time. Of course, if you are knowledgable in the high profit areas then you can earn nicely here BUT international members be warned, you need at least $100 to cash out and you need to fill out a bunch of forms which take months to process. US members can cash out at $10 without problems.

Consumer Reviews

Consumer Reviews is looking for your opinions on computer software, hardware and generally anything to do with computers. If you are something of a techie then you can write reviews here, of a minimum of 200 words, and earn 10p per submission and 5p every time it is read. You can also earn an additional 90p per review if it is voted as being a 'star review'. Minimum cash out is 20.

Howasit4u

Write brief reviews of online shops and your online shopping shopping experiences and you can win Amazon gift vouchers if that shop decides to upgrade their listing at this UK shopping portal. Howasit4u awards 5 vouchers for every upgraded listing your reviews generate.

Just a thought

These days on the web there are so many people writing about referral programs, easy money etc. that it is difficult to segregate them. They just fall into two categories – rights one and the other are scam ones. The latter list ofcourse is huge and still growing. Same is the case for freelance writing opportunities. Any thoughts?

Watch what you do or say

Watch your thoughts; they become words.

Watch your words; they become actions.

Watch your actions; they become habits.

Watch your habits; they become character.

Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.

What is ghost writing?

This is a kind of writing that is done on ‘behalf’ of the person. The ghost-writer’s name does not get revealed.

They provide you with quality professional content in about any format you require.

How to write a blog?

I have started off writing on the net. Suddenly I find myself scanning the net for information on what people do in their writings. The fist step was to prepare and write my own blog.

I have written my own blog on Feng Shui & Astrology, pervarakapadiaatblog.blogspot.com . And find this experience interesting.

Write a blog to express yourself. Write to tell stories. Write to share links and pictures and recipes and prayers and travel tips and love poems.

So how do we write blogs?

  • Omit all unnecessary words
  • Aim at keeping your posts at about 250 words
  • Include complete thoughts in headlines
  • Keep sentences and paragraphs short
  • Never lose your sense of humor
  • Write like it counts
  • White space is your friend
  • Use the simplest possible word and sentence structure
  • Read your post out loud and make sure you don't get stuck on complex construction
  • Use bulleted points whenever you can
  • Use subheads every few paragraphs, even in a 300 word post
  • Use bold text and italics for emphasis on words and phrases
  • Make sure your posts are easy to scan
  • Choose your voice and keep it consistent
  • Don't be afraid to voice opinions.
